Teströhrchen sind häufig verwendete Artikel aus Glas oder Plastik, die in den meisten biologischen, chemischen oder klinischen Forschungslaboren, Schulen, Universitäten oder industriellen Arbeitsplätzen zu finden sind. Es handelt sich um längliche, oben offene Röhrchen mit geschlossenem Boden, die in verschiedenen Längen und Durchmessern erhältlich sind und gewöhnlich in speziell dafür entwickelten Teströhrchen-Racks aufbewahrt werden. Teströhrchen sind zudem als Hochtemperatur-Röhrchen, Kulturröhrchen, Assayröhrchen und kleine „Durham“-Röhrchen mit einem Fassungsvermögen von wenigen ml bis zu 50 ml und mehr erhältlich.
Wiederverwendbare Teströhrchen aus Borosilikatglas weisen eine hohe Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen Hitze, Temperaturschock und Chemikalien auf und sind somit ideal für selbst anspruchsvollste Anwendungen geeignet. Teströhrchen aus Kalknatronglass werden für allgemeinere Prozesse verwendet. Teströhrchen aus Plastik sind aus Polypropylen oder, für bessere optische Transparenz, aus Polycarbonat und Polystyren hergestellt. Einige Plastik-Teströhrchen sind autoklavierbar, viele sind für den Einmalgebrauch bestimmt.
