Chloroform (CHCl3, CAS 67-66-3), auch Trichlormethan genannt, ist eine klare, dichte, farblose und nicht entzündliche Flüssigkeit mit angenehmem Geruch.
Chloroform schmeckt süßlich, löst sich nicht in Wasser, jedoch leicht in Alkohol, Aceton, Benzin und anderen organischen Lösungsmitteln. Chloroform wurde traditionell aus Aceton und Bleichpulver hergestellt, wird aber jetzt aus der photochemischen Reaktion von Methan und Chlor erzeugt.
Wird verwendet als Lösungsmittel in Labors aufgrund der relativen Unreaktivität und Mischbarkeit mit den meisten organischen Flüssigkeiten, in der organischen Synthese und bei der Aufreinigung von Penicillin und DNA. Chloroform wird industriell bei der Herstellung von Chlordifluormethan (HFCKW-22), einem Treibstoff und Kältemittel, verwendet.
Chloroform wurde als Anästhetikum im 19. Jahrhundert verwendet, kann aber Tod durch Lähmung verursachen. Chronische Exposition gegenüber dieser extrem gefährlichen Substanz kann zu Schäden in Nieren, Leber und Zentralnervensystem führen. Akute Exposition von Augen und Haut kann Übelkeit, Bewusstlosigkeit, Rötung und Schmerzen verursachen; Verschlucken kann zu Bauchschmerzen und Erbrechen führen.
