Description

Iodomethane is a methylating agent used for alkylating carbon, oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorus nucleophiles. For example, phenol reacts with methyl iodide to give anisole. In the Monsanto process, the insitu formed iodomethane reacts with carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium complex to give acetyl iodide, which on hydrolysis yields acetic acid. It reacts with magnesium to form the Grignard reagent, methylmagnesium iodide used in organic synthesis. It finds applications as an intermediate in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and in phase transfer catalysts.

Applications
L’iodométhane est un agent méthylateur utilisé pour alkyler des nucléophiles de carbone, d’oxygène, de soufre, d’azote et de phosphore. Par exemple, le phénol réagit avec l’iodure de méthyle pour donner de l’anisole. Dans le procédé Monsanto, l’iodométhane formé in situ réagit avec le monoxyde de carbone en présence d’un complexe rhodium pour donner de l’iodure d’acétyle qui, par hydrolyse, produit de l’acide acétique. Il réagit avec le magnésium pour former le réactif de Grignard, l’iodure de méthylmagnésium utilisé dans la synthèse organique. Il est utilisé comme intermédiaire dans la fabrication de produits pharmaceutiques et dans les catalyseurs de transfert de phase.

Sensible à la lumière et à l’humidité. Stockez-le dans un endroit frais. Gardez le récipient hermétiquement fermé dans un endroit sec et bien ventilé. Incompatible avec les agents oxydants forts, les bases fortes et l’oxygène.
